Social Publishing

How do the platforms through which we share information impact their reception? How do their mechanics influence what we decide to share? Considering "100 ways to share your work + life that aren’t social media", and our group discussion about the text, take something that you've already published, and share it (re-publish) in a new way.

Merciless Separation, by Constant Dullaart

This could be taking something you've posted online publicly (or semi-publicly) – a text message you sent to a single friend; a post on forum; or some other form of online "publishing" you have engaged in and translating it to a printed format. (What happens when you take the meme you posted to x.com and turn it into a postcard to send to a specific friend? Or a text thread from a recent group trip and make it into a booklet?)

Or, it could be something you published "IRL", such as – an artists book; pamphlet for an exhibition; flyer you posted in your apartment building; etc. and turning it into a digital format. (What happens when you crudely 3d scan a project you made last semester and publish it to a digital marketplace? Or reformat your business card as a webpage?)

Of course, it's ok to translate something within the same digital or physical medium, but just into a new format. Even better you can engage multiple senses beyond just the ocular and haptic. It's all up to you!

Ultimately, in this exercise we're curious how transmuting information compels it to "behave" differently, and in the process what new insights / perspectives / experiences we can gain from doing so. Furthermore, it is an opportunity for us to think about who is behind the everyday platforms that facilitate our lives.

There is no format, length, or content requirements. Just make sure you can share the outcome with the class next session.

Bring in your re-published item, or documentation of it. And write a short description walking us through your the process of re-publishing to give some narrative, context, and interpretation to the process.

Be prepared to share your image along with the project description next class on Sept 12.
